Remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) is an innovative method for monitoring heart rate and vital signs by using a simple camera to record a person, as long as any part of their skin is visible. This low-cost, contactless approach helps in remote patient monitoring, emotion analysis, smart vehicle utilization, and more. Over the years, various techniques have been proposed to improve the accuracy of this technology, especially given its sensitivity to lighting and movement. In the unsupervised pipeline, it is necessary to first select skin regions from the video to extract the rPPG signal from the skin color changes. We introduce a novel skin segmentation technique that prioritizes skin regions to enhance the quality of the extracted signal. It can detect areas of skin all over the body, making it more resistant to movement, while removing areas such as the mouth, eyes, and hair that may cause interference. Our model is evaluated on publicly available datasets, and we also present a new dataset, called SYNC-rPPG, to better represent real-world conditions. The results indicate that our model demonstrates a prior ability to capture heartbeats in challenging conditions, such as talking and head rotation, and maintain the mean absolute error (MAE) between predicted and actual heart rates, while other methods fail to do so. In addition, we demonstrate high accuracy in detecting a diverse range of skin tones, making this technique a promising option for real-world applications.

Automatic segmentation of anatomical structures is critical in medical image analysis, aiding diagnostics and treatment planning. Skin segmentation plays a key role in registering and visualising multimodal imaging data. 3D skin segmentation enables applications in personalised medicine, surgical planning, and remote monitoring, offering realistic patient models for treatment simulation, procedural visualisation, and continuous condition tracking. This paper analyses and compares algorithmic and AI-driven skin segmentation approaches, emphasising key factors to consider when selecting a strategy based on data availability and application requirements. We evaluate an iterative region-growing algorithm and the TotalSegmentator, a deep learning-based approach, across different imaging modalities and anatomical regions. Our tests show that AI segmentation excels in automation but struggles with MRI due to its CT-based training, while the graphics-based method performs better for MRIs but introduces more noise. AI-driven segmentation also automates patient bed removal in CT, whereas the graphics-based method requires manual intervention.

Multi-party training frameworks for decision trees based on secure multi-party computation enable multiple parties to train high-performance models on distributed private data with privacy preservation. The training process essentially involves frequent dataset splitting according to the splitting criterion (e.g. Gini impurity). However, existing multi-party training frameworks for decision trees demonstrate communication inefficiency due to the following issues: (1) They suffer from huge communication overhead in securely splitting a dataset with continuous attributes. (2) They suffer from huge communication overhead due to performing almost all the computations on a large ring to accommodate the secure computations for the splitting criterion.
In this paper, we are motivated to present an efficient three-party training framework, namely Ents, for decision trees by communication optimization. For the first issue, we present a series of training protocols based on the secure radix sort protocols to efficiently and securely split a dataset with continuous attributes. For the second issue, we propose an efficient share conversion protocol to convert shares between a small ring and a large ring to reduce the communication overhead incurred by performing almost all the computations on a large ring. Experimental results from eight widely used datasets show that Ents outperforms state-of-the-art frameworks by $5.5\times \sim 9.3\times$ in communication sizes and $3.9\times \sim 5.3\times$ in communication rounds. In terms of training time, Ents yields an improvement of $3.5\times \sim 6.7\times$. To demonstrate its practicality, Ents requires less than three hours to securely train a decision tree on a widely used real-world dataset (Skin Segmentation) with more than 245,000 samples in the WAN setting.

This paper presents an innovative automatic fusion imaging system that combines 3D CT/MR images with real-time ultrasound (US) acquisition. The system eliminates the need for external physical markers and complex training, making image fusion feasible for physicians with different experience levels. The integrated system involves a portable 3D camera for patient-specific surface acquisition, an electromagnetic tracking system, and US components. The fusion algorithm comprises two main parts: skin segmentation and rigid co-registration, both integrated into the US machine. The co-registration software aligns the surface extracted from CT/MR images with patient-specific coordinates, facilitating rapid and effective fusion. Experimental testing in different settings validates the system's accuracy, computational efficiency, noise robustness, and operator independence. The co-registration error remains under the acceptable range of~$1$ cm.

Skin lesion segmentation plays a critical role in the early detection and accurate diagnosis of dermatological conditions. Denoising Diffusion Probabilistic Models (DDPMs) have recently gained attention for their exceptional image-generation capabilities. Building on these advancements, we propose DermoSegDiff, a novel framework for skin lesion segmentation that incorporates boundary information during the learning process. Our approach introduces a novel loss function that prioritizes the boundaries during training, gradually reducing the significance of other regions. Human skin segmentation is a crucial task in computer vision and biometric systems, yet it poses several challenges such as variability in skin color, pose, and illumination. This paper presents a robust data-driven skin segmentation method for a single image that addresses these challenges through the integration of contextual information and efficient network design. In addition to robustness and accuracy, the integration into real-time systems requires a careful balance between computational power, speed, and performance. The proposed method incorporates two attention modules, Body Attention and Skin Attention, that utilize contextual information to improve segmentation results. These modules draw attention to the desired areas, focusing on the body boundaries and skin pixels, respectively. Additionally, an efficient network architecture is employed in the encoder part to minimize computational power while retaining high performance. To handle the issue of noisy labels in skin datasets, the proposed method uses a weakly supervised training strategy, relying on the Skin Attention module. The results of this study demonstrate that the proposed method is comparable to, or outperforms, state-of-the-art methods on benchmark datasets.

This paper addresses the problem of automatically detecting human skin in images without reliance on color information. A primary motivation of the work has been to achieve results that are consistent across the full range of skin tones, even while using a training dataset that is significantly biased toward lighter skin tones. Previous skin-detection methods have used color cues almost exclusively, and we present a new approach that performs well in the absence of such information. A key aspect of the work is dataset repair through augmentation that is applied strategically during training, with the goal of color invariant feature learning to enhance generalization. We have demonstrated the concept using two architectures, and experimental results show improvements in both precision and recall for most Fitzpatrick skin tones in the benchmark ECU dataset. We further tested the system with the RFW dataset to show that the proposed method performs much more consistently across different ethnicities, thereby reducing the chance of bias based on skin color. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our work, extensive experiments were performed on grayscale images as well as images obtained under unconstrained illumination and with artificial filters. Semantic segmentation consists in classifying each pixel of an image by assigning it to a specific label chosen from a set of all the available ones. During the last few years, a lot of attention shifted to this kind of task. Many computer vision researchers tried to apply autoencoder structures to develop models that can learn the semantics of the image as well as a low-level representation of it. In an autoencoder architecture, given an input, an encoder computes a low dimensional representation of the input that is then used by a decoder to reconstruct the original data. In this work, we propose an ensemble of convolutional neural networks (CNNs). In ensemble methods, many different models are trained and then used for classification, the ensemble aggregates the outputs of the single classifiers. The approach leverages on differences of various classifiers to improve the performance of the whole system. Diversity among the single classifiers is enforced by using different loss functions. In particular, we present a new loss function that results from the combination of Dice and Structural Similarity Index. The proposed ensemble is implemented by combining different backbone networks using the DeepLabV3+ and HarDNet environment. The proposal is evaluated through an extensive empirical evaluation on two real-world scenarios: polyp and skin segmentation. All the code is available online at https://github.com/LorisNanni.

Bayesian optimization has demonstrated impressive success in finding the optimum input x* and output f* = f(x*) = max f(x) of a black-box function f. In some applications, however, the optimum output f* is known in advance and the goal is to find the corresponding optimum input x*. In this paper, we consider a new setting in BO in which the knowledge of the optimum output f* is available. Our goal is to exploit the knowledge about f* to search for the input x* efficiently. To achieve this goal, we first transform the Gaussian process surrogate using the information about the optimum output. Then, we propose two acquisition functions, called confidence bound minimization and expected regret minimization. We show that our approaches work intuitively and give quantitatively better performance against standard BO methods. We demonstrate real applications in tuning a deep reinforcement learning algorithm on the CartPole problem and XGBoost on Skin Segmentation dataset in which the optimum values are publicly available.

Segmentation of the pixels corresponding to human skin is an essential first step in multiple applications ranging from surveillance to heart-rate estimation from remote-photoplethysmography. However, the existing literature considers the problem only in the visible-range of the EM-spectrum which limits their utility in low or no light settings where the criticality of the application is higher. To alleviate this problem, we consider the problem of skin segmentation from the Near-infrared images. However, Deep learning based state-of-the-art segmentation techniques demands large amounts of labelled data that is unavailable for the current problem. Therefore we cast the skin segmentation problem as that of target-independent Unsupervised Domain Adaptation (UDA) where we use the data from the Red-channel of the visible-range to develop skin segmentation algorithm on NIR images. We propose a method for target-independent segmentation where the 'nearest-clone' of a target image in the source domain is searched and used as a proxy in the segmentation network trained only on the source domain. We prove the existence of 'nearest-clone' and propose a method to find it through an optimization algorithm over the latent space of a Deep generative model based on variational inference. We demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method for NIR skin segmentation over the state-of-the-art UDA segmentation methods on the two newly created skin segmentation datasets in NIR domain despite not having access to the target NIR data. Additionally, we report state-of-the-art results for adaption from Synthia to Cityscapes which is a popular setting in Unsupervised Domain Adaptation for semantic segmentation. In our study, we tackle the problem of distracted driving by aiming to build a robust multi-class classifier to detect and identify different forms of driver inattention using the State Farm Distracted Driving Dataset. We utilize combinations of pretrained image classification models, classical data augmentation, OpenCV based image preprocessing and skin segmentation augmentation approaches. Our best performing model combines several augmentation techniques, including skin segmentation, facial blurring, and classical augmentation techniques. This model achieves an approximately 15% increase in F1 score over the baseline, thus showing the promise in these techniques in enhancing the power of neural networks for the task of distracted driver detection.

Modern approaches for semantic segmention usually pay too much attention to the accuracy of the model, and therefore it is strongly recommended to introduce cumbersome backbones, which brings heavy computation burden and memory footprint. To alleviate this problem, we propose an efficient segmentation method based on deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) for the task of hair and facial skin segmentation, which achieving remarkable trade-off between speed and performance on three benchmark datasets. As far as we know, the accuracy of skin tones classification is usually unsatisfactory due to the influence of external environmental factors such as illumination and background noise. Therefore, we use the segmentated face to obtain a specific face area, and further exploit the color moment algorithm to extract its color features. Specifically, for a 224 x 224 standard input, using our high-resolution spatial detail information and low-resolution contextual information fusion network (HLNet), we achieve 90.73% Pixel Accuracy on Figaro1k dataset at over 16 FPS in the case of CPU environment. Additional experiments on CamVid dataset further confirm the universality of the proposed model. We further use masked color moment for skin tones grade evaluation and approximate 80% classification accuracy demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed scheme.Code is available at https://github.com/JACKYLUO1991/Face-skin-hair-segmentaiton-and-skin-color-evaluation.

Criminal and victim identification based on crime scene images is an important part of forensic investigation. Criminals usually avoid identification by covering their faces and tattoos in the evidence images, which are taken in uncontrolled environments. Existing identification methods, which make use of biometric traits, such as vein, skin mark, height, skin color, weight, race, etc., are considered for solving this problem. The soft biometric traits, including skin color, gender, height, weight and race, provide useful information but not distinctive enough. Veins and skin marks are limited to high resolution images and some body sites may neither have enough skin marks nor clear veins. Terrorists and rioters tend to expose their wrists in a gesture of triumph, greeting or salute, while paedophiles usually show them when touching victims. However, wrists were neglected by the biometric community for forensic applications. In this paper, a wrist identification algorithm, which includes skin segmentation, key point localization, image to template alignment, large feature set extraction, and classification, is proposed. The proposed algorithm is evaluated on NTU-Wrist-Image-Database-v1, which consists of 3945 images from 731 different wrists, including 205 pairs of wrist images collected from the Internet, taken under uneven illuminations with different poses and resolutions. The experimental results show that wrist is a useful clue for criminal and victim identification. Keywords: biometrics, criminal and victim identification, forensics, wrist.

Semantic segmentation is an important preliminary step towards automatic medical image interpretation. Recently deep convolutional neural networks have become the first choice for the task of pixel-wise class prediction. While incorporating prior knowledge about the structure of target objects has proven effective in traditional energy-based segmentation approaches, there has not been a clear way for encoding prior knowledge into deep learning frameworks. In this work, we propose a new loss term that encodes the star shape prior into the loss function of an end-to-end trainable fully convolutional network (FCN) framework. We penalize non-star shape segments in FCN prediction maps to guarantee a global structure in segmentation results. Our experiments demonstrate the advantage of regularizing FCN parameters by the star shape prior and our results on the ISBI 2017 skin segmentation challenge data set achieve the first rank in the segmentation task among $21$ participating teams.

This work presents the first segmentation study of both diseased and healthy skin in standard camera photographs from a clinical environment. Challenges arise from varied lighting conditions, skin types, backgrounds, and pathological states. For study, 400 clinical photographs (with skin segmentation masks) representing various pathological states of skin are retrospectively collected from a primary care network. 100 images are used for training and fine-tuning, and 300 are used for evaluation. This distribution between training and test partitions is chosen to reflect the difficulty in amassing large quantities of labeled data in this domain. A deep learning approach is used, and 3 public segmentation datasets of healthy skin are collected to study the potential benefits of pre-training. Two variants of U-Net are evaluated: U-Net and Dense Residual U-Net. We find that Dense Residual U-Nets have a 7.8% improvement in Jaccard, compared to classical U-Net architectures (0.55 vs. 0.51 Jaccard), for direct transfer, where fine-tuning data is not utilized. However, U-Net outperforms Dense Residual U-Net for both direct training (0.83 vs. 0.80) and fine-tuning (0.89 vs. 0.88). The stark performance improvement with fine-tuning compared to direct transfer and direct training emphasizes both the need for adequate representative data of diseased skin, and the utility of other publicly available data sources for this task.

Skin Segmentation is widely used in biometric applications such as face detection, face recognition, face tracking, and hand gesture recognition. However, several challenges such as nonlinear illumination, equipment effects, personal interferences, ethnicity variations, etc., are involved in detection process that result in the inefficiency of color based methods. Even though many ideas have already been proposed, the problem has not been satisfactorily solved yet. This paper introduces a technique that addresses some limitations of the previous works. The proposed algorithm consists of three main steps including initial seed generation of skin map, Otsu segmentation in color images, and finally a two-stage diffusion. The initial seed of skin pixels is provided based on the idea of ternary image as there are certain pixels in images which are associated to human complexion with very high probability. The Otsu segmentation is performed on several color channels in order to identify homogeneous regions. The result accompanying with the edge map of the image is utilized in two consecutive diffusion steps in order to annex initially unidentified skin pixels to the seed. Both quantitative and qualitative results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed system in compare with the state-of-the-art works.

A reliable human skin detection method that is adaptable to different human skin colours and illu- mination conditions is essential for better human skin segmentation. Even though different human skin colour detection solutions have been successfully applied, they are prone to false skin detection and are not able to cope with the variety of human skin colours across different ethnic. Moreover, existing methods require high computational cost. In this paper, we propose a novel human skin de- tection approach that combines a smoothed 2D histogram and Gaussian model, for automatic human skin detection in colour image(s). In our approach an eye detector is used to refine the skin model for a specific person. The proposed approach reduces computational costs as no training is required; and it improves the accuracy of skin detection despite wide variation in ethnicity and illumination. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first method to employ fusion strategy for this purpose. Qualitative and quantitative results on three standard public datasets and a comparison with state-of-the-art methods have shown the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed approach.

This paper is aimed at developing and combining different algorithms for face detection and face recognition to generate an efficient mechanism that can detect and recognize the facial regions of input image. For the detection of face from complex region, skin segmentation isolates the face-like regions in a complex image and following operations of morphology and template matching rejects false matches to extract facial region. For the recognition of the face, the image database is now converted into a database of facial segments. Hence, implementing the technique of Elastic Bunch Graph matching (EBGM) after skin segmentation generates Face Bunch Graphs that acutely represents the features of an individual face enhances the quality of the training set. This increases the matching probability significantly.
